This green commemorative plaque records: Site of Rainhill Locomotive Trials 1829 The straight level stretch of track that can be seen from the top of the footbridge was used to test whether steam-driven locomotives could complete the journey from Liverpool to Manchester pulling heavy loads. Stephenson's Rocket won the competition. Recorded plaque organisation: Rainhill Civic Society.
