It was one of a large number of coaching inns in the town, which were resting places for most of the horse traffic coming to Devon and Cornwall. It remained a hotel until 1989. Over the years it has also been the site of a garage, the town's fire brigade and an Inland Revenue Office. Recorded plaque organisation: Rotary Club of Honiton.
