This blue commemorative plaque records: Botany Bay Wood on nearby Chat Moss is the largest woodland in Greater Manchester and the largest heronry in the North West of England. Herons can often be spotted along the canal. Workmen christened the remote area Botany Bay as it felt as if they were exiled to the Australian prison colony. Recorded plaque organisation: Salford City Council.
