What is recorded here

This green commemorative plaque records: John Richard Walbran. Walbran, historian and antiquarian, born 1817, lived here. By profession a wine merchant, he was a learned chronicler of the history of the city of Ripon and the area around. His guidebooks went into many editions. From 1866 he instigated and directed archaeological excavations at Fountains Abbey. He died in 1869 and is buried in Holy Trinity churchyard, opposite this building. Recorded plaque organisation: Ripon Civic Society.
