This grey commemorative plaque records: Duddingston Curling Tower This tower was erected in 1825 by the Duddingston Curling Society whose rules still form the basis of the Rules of Curling. The tower chamber was used to protect the stones, while the upper was used as a studio by the Rev. John Thomson, the "Father of Scottish Scene Painting". The tower was restored in 1978 by the Society for the Preservation of Duddingston Village with assistance from the Rotarian Curlers of Canada, the Historic Buildings Council, Edinburgh District COuncil, friends of the late Ted Reed of Oshawa, Ontario, and from the estate of Miss C.T. McNiven, founder member and for many years secretary of the Preservation Society. Recorded plaque organisation: Society for the Preservation of Duddingston Village.
