This claret commemorative plaque records: Northgate 1740 Originally built in 125 as part of the town's fortifications Northgate was the only one of the town's original five gates to survive. It was rebuild in 1740 with the Burgesses (meeting) ?Hall above replacing one of the town's prisons. In 1910-11 it was extensively restored.
