This commemorative plaque records: Penstone House once stood on this site. In 1937, Penstone House provided sanctuary for a number of refugee children from the Basque region of Spain who came to Britain fleeing bombing and starvation after the destruction of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. They were supported and cared for entirely by the local community of Lancing. Recorded plaque organisation: Lancing Parish Council.
