This brushed metal commemorative plaque records: The site of the earliest commercial telephone in Britain, assembled by Alfred Cunnington in 1878 to connect his wine merchant's business with his home at Southgate House, Devizes. The original apparatus can be seen in the Local History Gallery at Wiltshire Heritage Museum, Devizes.
