This blue commemorative plaque records: Wortley Grammar School was founded in 1677 by the bequest of Samuel Sunderland to teach boys English or Latin. It occupied this new schoolroom from 1814 to 1909 when the school closed. Notable pupils included mathematician and judge, C. J. Hargreave, banker and Leeds Mayor, Henry Oxley, and brickworks owner, Joseph Cliff Recorded plaque organisation: Leeds Civic Trust.
