Terraced three-bay two-storey L-plan gate lodge, built c.1870. Pitched fibre-cement slate roof with rolled terracotta ridge, brick chimneystack to rear with over-sailing courses. Brick flue raking to north gable. Carved pierced fasciaboards to front and rear eaves of front block, and plain timber to gables, and to eaves of rear wing, with replacement uPVC rainwater goods. Roughly squared rubble limestone walls with partially dressed ashlar sandstone block-and-start dressings to quoins. Chamfered sandstone sill course to first floor of front elevation. Stone dressings to front elevation and south gable, brick elsewhere. Segmental-headed door and window openings to front elevation, to south gable and to first floor of return, square-headed elsewhere, all with replacement uPVC frames. Front doorway has replacement timber door, and tall plain fanlight, with stone step. Two square-headed replacement timber doors to rear. Hope Castle estate service gateway attached to north end of building, rusticated sandstone pier having moulded plinth and carved cap. Sandstone pedestrian entrance gates to Saint Maeldoid's churchyard abuts to south.
This building is more restrained than its neighbours to each side, but adds to the architectural variety of the street. Its sandstone details contrast pleasantly with the rubble walling, and the pierced timber eaves connects it visually with the gate lodge to the north. Its varied openings and surround treatments visual and textural interest.
