Kiln

In hilly peatland in an area scattered with large natural boulders. Roughly oval in plan, this corn-drying kiln is defined by drystone walls (av. D 1m) and a circular bowl (diam. 2.8m; wall Wth 0.6-0.7m). The flue (L 1.1m; D 0.5m) is at the W end. The kiln was purposely hidden within a large group of boulders and it is not obvious in the landscape. It was concealed because it was associated with the illicit production of poteen and it probably dates from the late 19th to the early 20th century (McCarthy 1916, 13-16).
