What is recorded here
Unknown townland in Dublin, but the facts locate it at Kilgrovan, Waterford. The story below uses the Kilgrovan facts provided. Red sandstone no larger than a man's palm holds three letters and a ghost of a fourth, UMU T?, cut for a name now lost. It belongs with six other stones from the same early church, five kept at Mount Melleray Abbey and one companion in the National Museum of Ireland. The stone may be the missing end of that companion, though no one can be certain. A chisel worked wet clay-hard stone in a small workshop where prayer and identity were being learned. The cutter may have been young, teaching another person to read the marks before making them for good. What is certain is that the church at Kilgrovan produced more than one ogham stone, and what is lovely is that a fragment survived to keep the shape of a forgotten name.
One of seven ogham stones from an early ecclesiastical site (WA031-045----) at Kilgrovan, Co. Waterford. Five of these are located at Mount Melleray Abbey, Co. Waterford (WA021-003001-, WA021-003002-, WA021-003003-, WA021-003004-, WA021-003005-) and two, including this one (WA031-045015-), are in the National Museum of Ireland (DU018-247----, DU018-358----). Found in the 1960s it consists of a piece of old red sandstone (26.5 cm x 9.0 cm x 3.5 cm) and might be part of the missing section from the other ogham stone from this site that is in the museum (WA031-045008-; DU018-247----): it is not possible to be certain about this. The letters on the stone read: . . . UMU T?. . (Raftery 1969, 105; McManus 1997, 73)
This stone has been studied as part of the ‘Ogham in 3D’ project undertaken by the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. To access details go to the following website: https://ogham.celt.dias.ie/search.php?ciic=Kilgrovan_VII
