Whitley Castle is a Roman fort in Northumberland where the Reverend John Wallis was born in 1713 and later wrote the county history. He claimed that receiving his first breath inside ancient Roman walls inspired him to search for their lost towns, temples and military roads. The castle still holds that much younger man, driving him forward through centuries of stone and memory.
