Mulgrave Castle is a registered Grade II* park and garden in North Yorkshire where three structures occupied the same land across the centuries. The oldest is a legendary castle attributed to Wada, the second is a Norman stronghold destroyed by Parliament in 1647, and the third is a country house later held by the Phipps family. Roman bricks still appear inside the Norman work, and the wall bulged outward where uneven ground pulled at it, as if the castle had grown rather than been built.
