Gilling Castle is a Grade I listed house near Gilling East where Thomas de Etton built a fortified manor in the 14th century and Sir William Fairfax rebuilt it in the 16th century. The Great Chamber still displays nearly a hundred unique oak panels, Fairfax arms and Flemish glass dated 1585. After the Fairfax line ended, Ampleforth Abbey owned it and used it for St Martin's Ampleforth until it stood vacant and went on sale in 2022.
