Upsall Castle rose in 1327 when Geoffrey Scrope began a quadrangular fortress that later fell into ruin and rebirth as a manor house. The site still hides kitchen tower stones and faded Scrope arms beneath the soil, while a curious tradition claims John Constable cursed disloyal owners in 1610. That warning gives the place a sharp edge, as if the ground itself still expects allegiance from whoever walks its yards.
