This blue commemorative plaque records: Former 'model' workhouse opened 1859. St Mary's Hospital since 1948. Recorded plaque organisation: Scarborough Civic Society (Heritage Trail).
This site was originally a model workhouse established in 1859 to house the poor and unemployed under strict conditions, later becoming St Mary's Hospital in 1948 as part of the National Health Service reforms.
