Castle Batch is a Norman motte built by Walter of Douai between 1066 and 1086, rising thirty feet above Worle with a ditch thirty feet wide. Walter likely stood on that ridge, watching the coast and commanding the town below. Children may run across the grass now, unaware that they play upon the shoulders of a forgotten soldier.
