Ardrossan Castle stands as a ruined keep on a rocky ridge above the town, its vaulted cellars still bearing the brutal nickname Wallace's Larder from the slaughter of an English garrison during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Built around 1140 and later rebuilt by Clan Montgomery, the stone structure survived Cromwell's soldiers, who stripped its materials to build the Ayr Citadel, leaving behind only a shadowed skeleton of gun ports and blocked passages. The ghost of William Wallace is said to haunt these chambers, suggesting the violence of that ancient battle never fully drained from the rock.

Ardrossan Castle was built by the Maxwell family in the 13th century and is important as a historic stronghold associated with the powerful Lowland Scottish nobility.
