What is recorded here

Saltcoats is a possible medieval castle recorded only as a point within a hundred metres, leaving the real structure hidden beneath the living town. That uncertainty is not a flaw; it is the shape of the place. A castle may have stood, fallen, been forgotten and then covered by roads, houses and memory. The town continued to exist, which means the castle did not need to remain visible in order to have done its work.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Saltcoats as Castle (medieval)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
