Ardrossan Castle is a ruined medieval stronghold on a rocky ridge above North Ayrshire, first built around 1140 by Simon de Morville for Clan Barclay. Its vaulted cellars were called Wallace's Larder after an English garrison was killed there during the Wars of Scottish Independence, while later owners rebuilt the keep and Cromwell's soldiers stripped stones for the Ayr Citadel. The name combines ard, height, and rossan, rocky promontory, fitting the castle's exposed position above the town and sea.

Ardrossan Castle was built by the Boyd family in the 15th century and later held by the Montgomeries, Dukes of Argyll, in the 17th century. It is important as a historic stronghold associated with key Scottish noble families and the strategic development of the Ayrshire coast.
