Ardrossan Castle stands as a ruined keep on a rocky ridge above North Ayrshire, where Clan Montgomery rebuilt the gatehouse into a heightened tower during the fifteenth century. The vaulted cellars beneath the stones still carry the brutal nickname Wallace's Larder, marking the moment an English garrison was slaughtered during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Cromwell's soldiers later stripped the structure for the Ayr Citadel, leaving behind a ghostly shadow that local tradition claims belongs to William Wallace himself.
