What is recorded here

This is an estate chapel of Castletown tower house (WX053-027----) c. 165m to the NW. Synnott writing c. 1680 lists a chapel at Castletown (Hore 1862, 69; 1921, 60) and the site is described as a 'Chapel in ruins' on the1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. This is a rectangular structure (ext. dims. 8.5m E-W; 4.5m N-S) defined by the base of the walls (max. H c. 1.2m). There are no distinguishing features, and there is no evidence of an enclosure or burial. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996).
