Kilcowan was held by the service of half a knight’s fee from the Bigod estate. It was held in wardship by Peter Keting in 1247 and by Nicholas de Ketyng in 1307 (Brooks 1950, 37). The motte would have been the centre of the holding until the castle (WX046-041----) was established c. 220m to the NNE. The motte is situated on a level landscape c. 15m E of a canalised NNE-SSW stream and just within the perimeter of the ecclesiastical enclosure (WX046-042005-) of the early church site at SW. This is a flat topped earthen mound (diam. of top 8m; diam. of base 17m; H 3.6m) overgrown with scrub. It has no visible fosse, and a pit is excavated on the summit.
