Ballyhack was within the original grant to Dunbrody Abbey (WX039-030001-), and at the Suppression in 1541 it is described as having nine tenements occupied by nine fishermen (Hore 1900-11, vol. 3, 126-7). Robert Leigh writing in 1684 describes a few cabins at Ballyhack (Hore 1858-9, 458). The location of these houses cannot be precisely identified but they were probably between the castle (WX044-0009001-) and the harbour. Archaeological monitoring (03E1630) immediately outside the doorway of the castle identified the foundations of a cottage and its drains that could be dated to the 17th or 18th century through finds of Staffordshire slipware, clay-pipe fragments and glass (Reid 2006).
