A salmon weir is associated with Buttermilk Castle (WX044-001----). Weirs are attested in the foundation charter of Dunbrody Abbey (WX039-03001-). In 1541 the Scarre weir was operated by a Nicholas Key, and in 1545 this weir was granted to Sir Osborn Itchingham, and it was still in their possession in 1619 and 1635. In 1865 an inquiry by a Fishery Commission identified the weir at Buttermilk castle as the historical Scarre weir, and it was allowed to continue in operation until 1902, after which it was abandoned, although it may have been re-used since. It was an ebb-weir, catching salmon on the ebb-tide. The posts of the weir can still be seen at low tide. (Went 1946, 177 9)
