What is recorded here

There is a tradition that there was a castle at what is now the townland of Sallystown that was thought to have been built by the Devereux family (Jeffrey 1979). In the 17th century this townland is described on the Down Survey map (1655-58) in NLI (ms 725, microfilm P 7384, N 6380) of Kildavin parish as Gragenehowne, but there is no record of a castle or other structure. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
