What is recorded here

There is only one reference in 1607-08 to a second castle at Great Island (Hore 1900-11, vol. 3, 229) with the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map providing the only evidence of its location within the ringwork (WX039-028001-) and adjacent to the castle site (WX039-028002-). There are no visible remains of a structure at ground level. See the attached section from the Down Survey barony map (N at right) reproduced courtesy of the National Library of Ireland (Ms 725) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 28 January, 2013

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
