What is recorded here

According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) John Sutton, an Irish Papist, owned 60 acres at Ballysop in 1640, on which there was a ruined castle (Simington 1953, 185, 193). There are no other references to a castle here, but John Sutton and forty four dependents was listed for transporation to Connaught in 1653 (Hore 1900-11, vol. 6, 503). The precise location of a castle cannot be identified. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 January, 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
