(site of) Chapel Caron — Bolabaun

Situated on the N side of a ravine with a SW-NE stream c. 20m to the SE. This is the parish church of the small parish of Chapel Carron that existed in the 17th century (Simington 1953, 103), but which does not exist now even as a Civil parish. It has been claimed as the early Cill Cairne of St. Beoc (Culleton 1999, 130) and the walls were exposed in 1961 (Mac Eochaidh 1970, 73). The clay-bonded walls (Wth 0.65m; H 0.2-0.8m) of a rectangular building oriented ENE-WSW (int. dims. 6.25m x 3.65m) is within a subrectangular enclosure (dims. 26m E-W; 10 14m N-S) with some trees that is defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 1m; H 0.5m) at W and N but backing onto the ravine (H c. 6m) at S. There is a ramp entrance to the enclosure (Wth 2.2m) through a scarp (H 1.3m) on the E side. There is no evidence of burial, although the enclosure is described as a graveyard on the 1839 and 1941 eds of the OS 6-inch map. The building has a single entrance (Wth 1.2m) with a rebate for the door on the outside towards the W end of the S wall. St Nicholas' Well (WX037-010----) is c. 280m to the SW.
