What is recorded here

A castle and 120 acres at Ballyshannon was owned by Robert Devereaux in 1641 together with 180 acres in Scullaboge and 100 acres at Raheevarren in the part of Adamstown parish in Shelmaliere barony according to the Civil Survey (1654-6) (Simington 1953, 94). He also owned the tower house at Courthoyle (WX035-012002-) and extensive land in the Bantry part of Adamstown parish at that time. It is the only reference to a castle at Ballyshannon, and its location is not known. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
