The original castle at Old Ross is the motte (WX030-052001-) but by the 16th century a stone castle had been built (Hore 1900-11, vol. 1, 40-1), and according to the Civil Survey (1654-6) the castle and 1000 acres at Old Ross were the inheritance of William Plunkett of Dublin in 1640 (Simington 1953, 207). Robert Leigh writing in 1684 describes the castle as out of repair (Hore 1858-9, 453-4). The site of the castle is placed just S of the motte (WX030-052001-) on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and it is presumably from here that the two gargoyles that are now on the premises of the Royal Society of Antiquaries in Merrion Square, Dublin, were recovered (Hore 1900-11, vol. 1,1, n2).
