From: O’Mahony, A. (1987, 18, No. 13) Attached to the east wall of the North transept is a tombstone (Wth 0.91m; H 1.78m) with a central foliate cross with a skull and bone at the foot. The sun is shown on one side of the head of the cross, the moon on the other. There are numerous emblems of the crucifixion on either side of the arm of the cross, including dice, Christ’s garment, whip, cock, ladder, scourge and pillar, hammer, sword, spear, and the spear with sponge. At the foot of the cross are the coats of arms with initials of the Knowles and Dormer families. The inscription is along the edge of the stone. It reads:
Here lieth the bodies of Thomas Knowles whoe died of (the stone is broken here but there is no trace of an inscription) and Catherine Dormer his wife whoe died the 27 of September 1639
Thomas Knowles was sovereign of New Ross in 1633.
