Fulacht fia in Ballycourcy More

Identified in centre-line testing (E4110) in advance of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy road scheme and set aside for resolution as Ballycourcy More 4 (Hardy et al. 2010, 96). It is situated on a level landscape with a S-N stream c. 70m to the E. It was excavated (E4204) by D. Gallagher who recorded a rectangular, flat-bottomed trough (dims 3m NW-SE; 2.08m NE-SW; D 0.57m) with the remnants of slot-trenches for retaining planks at NW and SE, retained at the W corner by four large stones. The trough had three stake-holes in the S corner, and it slightly truncated a small pit (dims 0.71m x 0.54m; D 0.23m) on its SE side. A second rectangular, flat-bottomed trough (dims 2.12m NW-SE; 0.7m NE-SW; D 0.33m) with rounded ends was 4.46m to the E. A D-shaped pit (dims 1m x 0.75m; D 0.17m) was c. 4m S of the smaller trough and a second pit (dims 1.49m x 0.7m; D 0.38m) was c. 13m to the N. The troughs were filled with layers containing various amounts of burnt stone, and a small remnant of a burnt mound (dims 4.5m x 3.5m; T 0.04m) lay over the smaller trough. Some features extended outside the excavated area to the W. The burnt mound (WX026-086----) is c. 150m to the SSE.
