Situated in the valley of the N-S Derry river at a point where an E-W stream joins it just to the N. An abbey of the Augustinian Canons Regular called the Abbey of Down existed here at the Suppression in the sixteenth century according to J. O'Donovan c. 1840 (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 1, 238–9). No traces of any buildings exist today, but the head of an ogee-headed window, said to be from the site, is now at the County Museum, Enniscorthy (WX020-031003-). The earthwork (WX004-001----) is immedately to the W. (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 169)
