Partially hachured — Garhy

Monument surveyed by the ASI in 1976 and described as 'The site is on lowlying poor pasture land at the N foot of a low E-W ridge. A large, broad oval (?) enclosure outlined by a low scarp with a low bank at its upper edge. Unfortunately the whole site is heavily overgrown with trees and bushes and is difficult to examine. The perimeter appears to have been levelled from ENE through E to ESE and the site now has a horseshoe shape. The perimeter is faint on the N and NW and from NW through W through S to ESE. The perimeter is a low bank of stone and earth with facings, external and internal of large stones set upright. There are a number of gaps in the bank but these may be due to disturbance and it is not possible to distinguish an original entrance. The interior rises unevenly towards the centre. To the NE and SSW of the centre are 2 subrectangular enclosures which are possible hut sites (WM032-001001-; WM032-001002-). Both of them are outlined by low irregular banks or walls of stone and earth. The NE house site (int. dims. 5m NW-SE; 5m NE-SW; wall T. 2m) is larger and its walls (H 0.8m) are built of large irregular stones, in places reduced to a low bank of earth and stone. There is an entrance gap (Wth 1m) on the E wall, narrow and lined with thin slabs laid on edge. The SW house (int. dims. 5.2m NW-SE; 3.5m NE-SW; Wall T 1.8m) is smaller and more irregular and its walls (H 0.7m) are roughly built of large stones. No entrance feature visible. There are some stones visible here and there in the interior which is overgrown with trees and bushes. The site is not convincing as a ringfort. It may be a late farmyard. The two hut sites also look late in date perhaps 18th/19th century? There is a good deal of rock outcropping in the field to the N and NE of the site' (SMR File, 15/06/1978). The possible monument is depicted as a sub-rectangular-shaped earthwork on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map with two possible rectangular house sites (WM032-001001-; WM032-001002-) in the N quadrant of the monument. On this map the monument is indicated as being located in an area of rock outcrop. This monument is visible on OSI aerial photos 2005 as a roughly circular area overgrown with bushes and trees (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,631658,744301,6,0; accessed 12 February 2013).
