Windmill Stump — Streamstown (moycashel By.)

Situated on a low eminence (349ft/106m OD), in pasture. Annotated ‘Windmill Stump’ on the 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map and depicted as a small, circular-shaped tower with a rectangular-shaped building abutting to SW. The windmill is in the centre of a roughly circular-shaped enclosure (approx. diam. 41m) which is open to S with access route to the public road at S and where it encloses a limekiln which may have been the source of the stone used to construct the windmill tower. Post-1700 windmill described in 1980-2 as a roughly circular-shaped, ivy clad stump of a windmill (approx. diam. 6.4m; H 4m) with openings (Wth 1.25m; T 0.75-1m) at N and S. There is a considerable amount of rubble within but no trace of a mill wheel or the workings of any machinery. On the interior there is a ledge about 2.5m above the present ground level which probably supported the first floor. The windmill is situated in the centre of a circular-shaped enclosure which is defined by a low tree-lined scarp from SSW-W-N-E-SE, with a field wall at the base. According to local information, there is no known history of the windmill or last date of its use. Monument is visible today as a circular-shaped tower covered in vegetation in a densely overgrown tree-lined circular-shaped enclosure on Digital Globe aerial photography.
