According to Cox (1972, 155) 'in Tully townland is the last seat of the Magawlys of Calry. Their old house a modest one still stands and nearby is a high wall of old masonry containing a few splayed windows measuring 4" by 15". The wall would appear to have once surrounded an older building or 'castle' '. Cox appears to be describing the possible remains of a bawn wall which enclosed an old building possibly a castle that was replaced in the 18th century by the present house marked Tullymagawly on the OS 6-inch maps.
