A house annotated as 'Shandona' on the current ed. OS 6-inch map may have been built on the site of the medieval castle of 'Sendonagh' described as a 'ruinous castle' in a land grant of 1609. In this year Sir Robert Nugent of Walshestown Castle (WM018-155----) was granted 'in Sendonagh [Shanonagh] otherwise Old-Sonday, a ruinous castle, 40 messuages, 40 gardens, and a plowland containing 140a arable great measure, 40a pasture, 40a moor, 40a bog, 40a meadow, 40a marsh' (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 196).
