The precise location of a mill in the townland of Milltown mentioned in a seventeenth century land grant to the Earl of Kildare has not been identified. In 1609 Gerald, Earl of Kildare was granted 'the ruinouse castle (WM017-058---), town and lands of Ballymullen otherwise Milton, containing 1 caruc. and a ruinous mill there' (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 140). The corn mill in the adjoining townland of Corkan may be located on the site of the medieval mill. Alternatively the medieval mill may have been located elsewhere within the townland of Milltown.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
