The precise location of the medieval mill of Kilmaglish which stood on the banks of the River Gaine has not been identified. In 1682 Sir Henry Piers of Tristernagh described the source of the River Gaine and two mills standing in the townland of Kilmaglish and Ballynagall/Monylea. He wrote the following about the River Gaine; 'It hath its original from several springs that issue from the higher grounds which lie to the East and South of Monylea; these springs centring short of the town [Monylea], form in one channel a very pretty brook, which thence soon falleth over a mill at Kilmaglish, and about a mile further over another at Ballinegall (WM012-209----)' (Vallancey 1786, 6). The Mill House depicted on the 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map in the townland of Monylea may be one of the mills described in 1682.
