The townland of Coolamber straddles the modern counties of Longford and Westmeath. Coolamber Castle depicted as a tower house type fortification on the 1654-9 Down Survey map of Moygoish Barony (NLI MS 723-4). The terrier of the Down Survey map of Street parish recorded that there was a ruinous castle in Coolamber which belonged to James Nugent (ibid.). This castle is also depicted on the Down Survey map of Street Parish in Co. Longford where it is depicted standing in Co. Westmeath. Coolamber Castle (LF016-018001-) now stands in Co. Longford and is located 575m WSW of Coolamber House which is a 19th century country house. No medieval castle was ever located at Coolamber House. The medieval castle of Coolamber is today located in Co. Longford. Coolamber House described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage as a 'Detached five bay two storey house on L-shaped plan, built c.1850, with projecting cut stone tetrastyle Doric porch to centre of entrance front (east). Now out of use' (www.buildingsofireland.ie).
