Hut site in Ballymarroge

On a relatively steep W facing slope of Cronelea Hill, with extensive views to the W. Overlooking the village of Kilquiggan. The field has some dense areas of gorse and bracken. However, immediately to the S the land has been reclaimed and cleared. There are lazy beds throughout this field, but they respect the monument and do not traverse the interior of the enclosure. At the time of the visit the bracken was down, but during the summer the monument would be engulfed. There is only a small area of gorse at the SE edge of the enclosure. A circular enclosure (23.3m N-S x 22.5m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (Wth 1.8m; Ext H 40cm; Int. H 20cm, all at W; Wth 2.3m; H 50cm, all at N). There is some stone heaped up against the bank along the N and NE, most likely as clearance. There is a possible entrance at the SSE covered in gorse. The interior level of the enclosure drops c. 1m from E to W, reflecting the overall slope, but it does appear to have been cut slightly into the hillside. There are no lazy beds internally. Roughly central is a barely perceptible hollow area 4.5m across, which may represent the remains of a hut site (WI043-031001-). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 17 October 2012
