Enclosure in Killinure

Located in a gently undulating landscape (c. 119m OD) characterised by tillage and pastoral farming, and located towards the N end of a field currently in use for pastoral farming (July 2021). Landscape slopes gently from S to N. Site located adjacent (c. 250m) to Killinure House (NIAH 16404203) and c. 450 SW of Oaks Cross Roads within the historic demesne of Killinure House (as indicated on the Ordnance Survey first ed. six-inch map of c. 1838). Cropmark(s) located c. 330m S\SSW of an enclosure (WI042-006----), and c. 1.3kms ENE of the site of a burial ground (WI042-005----) that is also located in the townland of Killinure. This enclosure(s) or field system is visible as a cropmark(s) on the Google Earth aerial photograph of the site (July 2021). It consists of irregular feature (ext. dims c. 142.4m N-S x 104.2m E-W) that is defined by a ditch (Wth c. 3.79 to E boundary; c. 2.2m to W and N boundaries) that is most clearly visible along the N, W and E boundaries in the above aerial photograph. No visible evidence for an entrance gap. There is an additional irregular feature\enclosure\field system (ext. dims c. 85m N-S x 59.4m E-W) attached to the W boundary of the above feature that is defined by a narrow ditch (Wth c. 1.6m) that can be traced along the entire circuit. Other linear cropmarks within the same field are former field boundaries indicated on the Ordnance Survey first ed. six-inch map of c. 1838 that have been later removed (post c. 1910). It is possible that the above irregular features are a former field system that was later reordered following the establishment of the Killinure Estate during the early-nineteenth century although they may be the result of earlier activity to site.
