The OS letters (O'Flanagan 1928, 119) mention the possible remains of a church, traces of graves and a possible bullaun stone (oval basin in a large earthfast boulder). Ronan (1928, 138) suggests the church (WI024-016001-) was a penal chapel.
According to the OS letters of 1838-40 ‘There is a large roundish rock (WI024-016---) in the townland of Coolnakill twenty one feet (6.4m) in circumference and about eighteen inches (0.45m) in height, having an oval bason sunk in the top towards the south side, measuring nineteen inches (0.48m) one way, fifteen (0.38m) the other and ten inches (0.25m) in depth. They call it the Holy Stone, but have no tradition relative to it’ (O’Flanagan 1928, 119).
