What is recorded here

Situated near the E shore of the Upper Lake at Glendalough. Described in the OS Letters of 1838-40 (O'Flanagan 1928, 200) as 'near the Reefert church (WI023-028001-) on the south side of river are two enclosures (WI023-025-) like forts, but they are not of the class vulgarly called Danes forts, but were probably enclosures for cattle'. Circular area (diam. 18.6m) visible in 1981, and marked on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. Not now visible at ground level. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 December 2008
