Archaeological excavation (97E0325) at the S end of Church St., on the W side identified a number of pits that were probably dug for the clay in the 17th and 18th centuries, but these had removed any evidence of earlier occupation or activity, apart from a N-S drain on the W side of the 16th century Church St. (Pollock 1999b 11-19, 2000e) Pollock, D.
