A licence to enclose a deerpark of 1200 acres or less was granted by King James 1 to Sir Richard Boyle (Power 1905, 120), and a deerpark enclosing 1177 acres and three townlands was developed in the 17th century. It was extant in 1685 according to Sir Richard Cox (Walton 1987, 28), and is shown on a map published by Smith (1746, Pl. 1) where it is described as containing 1192 acres. The masonry wall (max. H c. 2m) survives around most of the park.
