Situated on a pinnacle of scrub-covered rock outcrop. The castle of Newcastle belonged to John Power of Dunhill (WA025-045----) in 1641 through default on a mortgage by David Power from Shangarry, Co. Cork, (Simington 1942, 136). It may have belonged to Prendergast family in the 16th century (Garstin 1904, 306). The foundations of a rectangular structure (dims. 13m N-S; 12m E-W) survive overlooking Newcastle parish church (WA016-026001-) c.70m to SSE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
