House — 17th century in Waterford City

Facing S onto Cathedral Square and backing onto Chairman’s Arch to the rear, in the centre of Waterford City. There is a terrace of houses at this location on Ryland's 1673 map of Waterford city. This is a three-storey terraced town house with four bays at ground floor level consisting of a a flat-headed door at the W end and another between twp windows, three bays at first-floor level and a pitched and slated roof and two dormer windows. The fenestration is irregular, particularly to the rear, and consists of replacement timber windows. The rear wall, which has a noticeable outward bowing, diminishes in thickness as it rises. There are three chimney stacks, one in the E wall, one over the W bay and one over the E bay. There is an angle fireplace in the NE corner of the E room and a much larger angle fireplace in the SW angle of the W room. It is possible that the building between the W chimney stack and that at the E end acted as a separate unit within the terrace, this is suggested by the placement of the fireplaces. The W bay, which now forms a hall, may have belonged to an adjoining house. Though the building has been modified, the rear elevation appears to be original and consists of oak timber framing with brick infill built off a stone base. There are the remains of oak timber framing in the ground-floor hall with sockets for receiving timbers. The oak timber framing and angle fireplaces suggest a pre-18th-century date for this building.
